Planned Parenthood

This organizations has received a lot of publicity of late. Quite a bit of negative publicity. Though the vast majority of this publicity surrounds information that ranges from half truths right to flat out bullshit, the fear mongering campaign (a fire fueled heavily by many GOP presidential contenders) has worked.
Texas has cut their funding, and I believe that Florida (under Jeb Bush!) severely restricted it. And if the Christian Conservative misogynists get their way, Planned Parenthood could be defunded (and thus, effectively crippled) nationally.

All this, because of a scummy  organization (The Center For Medical Progress) claiming to expose PP for selling baby parts. Though money was indeed exchanged in said transactions, it was for logistics. Someone in a location that is NOT the given Planned Parenthood clinic needs fetal tissues for research, so some money must be exchanged to cover shipping.

Its not for fetal foie gras . . . .  its for fedex.

Though the whole thing was exposed soon after as a load of crap (drummed up to further defame the embattled organization), it worked. Presidential  candidates that likely know better, are exploiting the hell out of this issue. Taking advantage of the voting public’s ignorance of ALL of the services provided by this organization (of which a bare MINIMUM is what they are most known for . . . abortion). And even that is illegal to fund with federal funds by law.

Since the cure to ignorance (well, besides willful ignorance) is education and knowledge, lets learn about Planned Parenthood.

Being that I live in Canada, some may feel that my views on this topic are out of place (it would not be the first time that an American conservative blogger has told me to butt out of American politics).

But like a bad case of crabs (Planned Parenthood can help you with that, FYI), its hard to keep me down. Especially when your an idiot claiming intellectual superiority, yet falling for false information that most anyone with a brain can see though.
This said person has also recently made a few interesting (and equally stupid) remakes on immigration. Though themselves being an immigrant to The Land of the Free.

But enough dirt.

Being that I live in Canada, there are many services that I have at my disposal (as do all Canadians) that I/we take for granted.  One of those is our single payer healthcare system.
Everything from health checkups and contraception is (for the most part) accessible to all. But such is not the case for a great many Americans. Though available, access to these services can often be restricted due to economic status (lack of income). Which is where Planned Parenthood comes in.

Though they are known for one thing only (for the most part), their wide range of services is communicated in the name itself. They do not just deal in the very end result of a sexual encounter, they cover EVERY stage (prevention, protection, the morning after pill, STI screening and treatment, abortion).

We are a trusted health care provider, an informed educator, a passionate advocate, and a global partner helping similar organizations around the world. Planned Parenthood delivers vital reproductive health care, sex education, and information to millions of women, men, and young people worldwide.

For nearly 100 years, Planned Parenthood has promoted a commonsense approach to women’s health and well-being, based on respect for each individual’s right to make informed, independent decisions about health, sex, and family planning.

Providing Trusted Community Health Care

Planned Parenthood is America’s most trusted provider of reproductive health care. Our skilled health care professionals are dedicated to offering men, women, and teens high-quality, affordable medical care. One in five American women has chosen Planned Parenthood for health care at least once in her life.

The heart of Planned Parenthood is in the local community. Our 59 unique, locally governed affiliates nationwide operate approximately 700 health centers, which reflect the diverse needs of their communities.

These health centers provide a wide range of safe, reliable health care — and the majority is preventive, primary care, which helps prevent unintended pregnancies through contraception, reduce the spread of sexually transmitted infections through testing and treatment, and screen for cervical and other cancers. Caring physicians, nurse practitioners, and other staff take time to talk with clients, encouraging them to ask questions in an environment that millions have grown to trust.

They do not just deal in the before and after procedures of sex, as this shows. They also do cervical cancer screening. As well other more generalized healthcare needs (at some clinics).

Planned Parenthood health centers around the country offer you the health care you need. Our caring and knowledgeable staff provide a wide range of services. Many health centers provide general health care.

General health care services vary by location. They may include

Planned Parenthood health centers also offer sexual and reproductive health services.

Planned Parenthood works to make health care accessible and affordable. Some health centers are able to charge according to income. Most accept health insurance. If you qualify, Medicaid or other state programs may lower your health care costs.

Over the last while, I have heard this organization called many names. One of the most notable names I can recall being used to describe this organization is psychopathic.

Having been though the list of services, it would seem that this organization is not as much psychopathic as it is, a savior. In a society that has not gotten its shit together in terms of the longterm health and well being of its citizens, many are lucky to have access to this option. Though they are mostly focused (or so it seems) on women’s health, they also provide services to men.

As such, this argument that going against this organization because it is pro-choice, is frankly ridiculous. They DO INDEED offer abortion services. But amongst a full line of other sexual health services. I would bet that the 3 to 4% total percentage of abortions performed by the organization NATIONALLY (that is their entire abortion workload) IS on account to these other services. Take these services away, and its an almost guaranteed conclusion that accidental pregnancy numbers will go up. And without proper (or easy) access to things like the morning after pill, chances are good that the number of abortions will only go up.

That is what we call, being counter productive. But it gets worse.

As I have noted above (all taken straight from the Planned Parenthood website!), they also preform other more generalized healthcare services. Everything from cervical cancer screening, to flu and tetanus shots (among many other potentially life saving services). If PP were crippled by defunding, its possible that many people’s access to these services may become extremely restricted (or non existent). So I don’t think it a stretch to think that the closure of these clinics could spell death for some individuals who were denied what should be a human right (medical care).

Given this assessment, its interesting that the people leading the charge to cripple Planned Parenthood primarily call themselves pro-lifers (acting on such principals).
Because their goal (closure of all Planned Parenthood clinics nationwide) is not just counter productive to their main goal of having less (well, NO) abortions. It is also inherently anti-life, in the numbers of people that will suffer or die without PP’s general health service availability.

These people may think they are pro-life to the core, but they are MUCH worse than the most staunchly pro-choice advocates that they despise. They would rather see people needlessly die, than to accept the choices of a extremely small number of women taking control of their bodies.

These people are not warriors of life. They are psychopaths.
